Catnip is a medicinal plant with a commonly used citrus smell. It is related to basil and has two quite interesting properties: The first is the ability to attract cats, its smell makes them completely crazy for some reason and looks forward to being near this plant. The second interesting effect: It eliminates cockroaches because of their smell, the roaches just can’t take the smell of this plant. You can combine both things (the cat attraction and its anti-roach smell) to kill these pests in the blink of an eye. Want to know how? Just keep reading.
Catnip to repel roaches
Catnip is scientifically proven to eliminate cockroaches. This is because its smell is quite strong and affects its reproductive cycle. The use of the same does not have to be necessarily in catnip completely fresh, but can also be a used dehydrated version or any other type. All that matters is that it continues to have its aromatic properties, as it is precisely its aroma that makes cockroaches hate it. If the aroma is not present there is no point in using it, it does not have any toxic properties or causes any problems using it in media such as the kitchen or living room. On the contrary, it can even be used as a decorative plant or ingredient for food and beverages.
How to use catnip to repel roaches
The use of this plant for cockroach removal is quite simple: It should simply be placed (either in pots or directly in twigs and leaves of the plant) on sites where cockroaches are believed to have made their nests. These are usually the darkest, wettest places in the house, from the kitchen to the bathroom. It’s also a good idea to check the ventilation ducts, pipes, and electrical contacts because even though they are unusable places, cockroaches also tend to make their nests in these places since they allow them to move without being seen.
You can also combine catmint with sugar and boric acid in a paste. In this way, the smell of sugar attracts them, while boric acid and catmint will kill them, also, the introduction of catmint to the mixture causes it to be less harmful to health because the chemical effects it has on humans are less present thanks to the citrus fruits that include catnip. However, it is still not recommended to use it in spaces where there are children and pets because despite being weakened can still cause discomfort in them.
More about catnip cockroaches
Not only is it one of the most effective cockroach repellents in the plant kingdom, but one of the best in general. In the late 1990s, researchers at Iowa State University determined that the smell of catnip is 100 times more effective in repelling cockroaches than the high-use active chemical repellent. You can also use it in its fresh or dry form, or you can make tea from the dried plant and spray it in areas where you’ve seen cockroaches. This will keep them completely in line without the need to use any other type of chemical poison. Which is perfect if you have children or pets in your home.
As an extra fact, a combination that can allow you to eliminate all the cockroaches in the house (as well as other vermin and pests such as mice) are cats with catmint. Catnip is extremely attractive to cats, making them more active and better hunters. Therefore its combined use makes cats hunt and eats cockroaches (which is quite good for them as they are high in protein). This way the cockroaches will have no option to escape because if they don’t die from the smell of catnip, they will do it for the cat itself.
Catnip and roaches TIP
As already mentioned having a cat at home can be a good addition, as the catmint will give you a great vigor that will allow you to hunt cockroaches. It is also a good idea to make infusions in which this herb is used because the smell will impregnate the whole house (which will make the cockroaches completely crazy) and also, you can use the liquid as a kind of natural poison. You simply sprinkle it (with the help of a sprayer or an applicator) through the places where cockroaches can make their nests (except for electrical outlets for obvious reasons).
Another thing you can try is to use that same fire, applying it in wardrobes and furniture with the help of the sprinkler. This will make the smell last inside them and the cockroaches won’t come near them at any time. So you can quickly get rid of those pesky vermin using only the best natural products.
